The Top Ten Photos of 2024 from ShupeStudios

Welcome to my Top Ten photos of 2024. This is always a difficult list for me to create since I take tens of thousands of photos each year and winnowing them down to a few favorites is a herculean task. I’ve found that photography is both a science and an art form and as a professional, the key to success has been that rather than taking photos, I make them. In other words, my job is to take something that may not be particularly extraordinary and, through the magic of the lens, make it unforgettable. Please join me in reviewing my Top Ten of 2024 - I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

I love architecture and what it stands for. This stately home has been poised on the ocean’s edge for over 100 years and has witnessed both calm waters and storms. Photographing it at sunset speaks to its history and hints at the stories it could tell.

This contemporary home is a wonderful juxtaposition to the photo above with its strong angular lines, stone construction, and modern feel. This scene evokes the casual elegance of a summer evening in a contemporary suburb.

As an architectural photographer, I marvel at the symmetry and grandeur of this Spanish gem.

This old building has stories to tell. When it was built, horses plied the streets in front, and now we see the taillights of cars. I particularly enjoyed shooting this at magic hour since the light shining through the windows lets us see not only the façade but also the building's interior, giving it a much more three-dimensional feel.

This is a fun picture because it gives you a unique vantage point. One of the many things I love about photography is the ability to give people a new perspective.

This photo grabbed my eye because it is a slice of Americana. A little café or meeting room in offices or apartment buildings is a ubiquitous part of architecture, and its pleasant ordinariness is its charm.

This photo combines the sterile modern technology of an operating room with the human drama that unfolds in this space every time it is used.

I love this picture because it tells the story of the people who build things. Construction is dangerous, demanding work that is often uncelebrated and anonymous. Yet, this picture asks if it should be that way.

And what of the people who inhabit buildings? This photo of two schoolboys is a favorite because of their smiles and casual interaction. A picture like this not only speaks to the moment but makes us reflect on the fact that in no time, these boys will be up and out  - onto their next school and a lifetime of adventures.

This photo puts you in the moment and in the audience – she is talking directly to you.

The story of buildings is the story of mankind, but nature is a part of that story too. I love catching people in nature for the perspective it provides and, in this photo, the tranquility of pushing off into calm waters.

I close with a shot capturing me enjoying my favorite pastime in New England’s best snow conditions. It is a rare instance of waist-high powder skiing and the smiles it brings.

I am truly fortunate to be in a profession I love and want to thank you for your patronage, friendship, and inspiration in 2024. From my family to yours, I want to wish you a very Happy Holidays and all the best in the New Year. I look forward to working with you in 2025!
