Other than when I travel out of the country. I can’t remember ever photographing a building for myself because of how well it was done. However, I happened upon this building in Portsmouth NH and it blew me away.
I’ve been an architectural photographer for many years and I always find that great architecture captivates people and breaths life into the landscape. It transcends functionality and transforms spaces into experiences, which is exactly what this building does.
Inside and out it is an experience. The building invites you to come in, have a seat and enjoy yourself. Take a look at the photos below and I think you will see what I mean.
The exterior architecture is so unique and engaging that it takes over the entire block. It was so unexpected to find this in an otherwise unremarkable part of the city that I parked my car and walked in to see if the interior lived up to the promise of the exterior.
It did. The second I stepped through the door I knew I was in for a treat. From the native wood and soaring ceiling to sculptures and depiction of native sea life I found myself saying ”wow".
The interior architecture, use of materials, furniture, and lighting all combine to create a captivating atmosphere unlike anything I had ever seen before.
As I walked further I saw intimate seating and cozy nooks for conversation - all thoughtfully styled and furnished to say sit down, take a break and relax.
There was even a terrific bar area that works for a quiet midday snack or a busy Friday evening.
The juxtaposition of tables in a food area with seating in front of a huge stone fireplace or tucked away for a quiet conversation was impressive and indicated thoughtful design by the principal architect, interior architect, and the interior designer.
Walking up to the second floor I found the same thoughtful approach to design - with curved windows, murals, unique furniture and the same attention to detail as the first floor.
And finally - stepping outside I found myself in a dramatic courtyard with intricate stonework, a magnificent wave sculpture, a fountain, and seating for people wanting a little fresh air or just a relaxing break in their day.
I have photographed impressive architecture for most of my career and one of the things I love about my job is seeing the boundless creativity that exists in the world. This building and outside environment was truly impressive, not just because it was so interesting but because it showed me a wonderful example of how architecture can forge a bond between people and their built environment.
None of these terrific photos would have been possible without the help of John Willemse, the Marketing and Creative Director of Portsmouth Hospitality and Robert Ozoonian, COO, of Hearth Food Garden. A sincere thank you to both!
