Throughout the year I take thousands of photos, actually tens of thousands, so it is difficult to cull the list of favorites to just ten. Sometimes a pictures makes my top ten list not simply because of the picture itself, but because of the circumstances surrounding it. For example, it may have been that a photograph was very difficult to get – or that it took me hours to get it just right. In other cases it may have been serendipity and I just happened to be there at the right time. In some photos, I was able to take something that wasn’t particularly extraordinary and through the magic of the lens, make it extraordinary.
Without further ado, here are my top ten picks of 2023.
I loved the color contrasts in this image - walls, sky, logo - and the integrated shapes - they made for a “wow” picture.
Capturing a slice of life is always hard because people tend to pose for the camera. I was able to capture this moment, especially the little boy’s expression, in a way that brings the scene alive.
The wonderful architecture of this building is hard to miss. In addition, you have to smile when realizing that the staid businesses once occupying this space have been replaced by a dispensary.
The red structure framed what might have been an otherwise average shot and gave it interest and life.
This lovely interior has a lot going for it - notice how both the stairway and hall draw your eye and pull you into the picture.
So much of what I photograph involves new structures so I found it interesting (if not a little sad) when I came upon the deconstruction of a building.
The geometry in concert with the lighting and motion in this photo is stunning.
This is a photo that maybe shouldn’t work, but does. The sea of contrast in materials, colors, patterns and geometry usually pulls a space apart, yet here, these contrasts combine to form a lovely photo.
I enjoy the symmetry, detail, and contrast of color and shapes in this picture. The more you look the more you see.
I love lifestyle photos - freezing a moment in time as people go about their everyday lives can be magical.
Who doesn’t love a birds eye view? I take pictures from up above all year long in helicopters, on cranes, and out of windows. I found this one particularly interesting due to the myriad of shapes and patterns that that one would never appreciate from the ground.

If you are counting, this is photo number eleven. I couldn’t resist because it is one of my personal favorites, taken last month on my first visit to Paris in over forty years. As an architectural photographer I was captivated by this amazing structure - and thrilled to photograph it.
